How Digital Clutter Slowly Becomes Everyday Stress

Something I’ve noticed a lot recently while helping customers is just how stressful having a disorganised computer can make you feel, often without you even realizing it.

It can start small - a few files saved directly to the desktop instead of organised into a folder. Then a couple of folders that never got renamed properly (new folder, new folder 1, new folder 2 etc). Then a few unread emails become hundreds (or sometimes thousands) of emails left sitting in your inbox. You have contact lists full of duplicate numbers, outdated details, or names and emails with no context to who they even are.

Over time, little things like this build up and suddenly become a much bigger mental task to deal with. You want to have a computer clean-up but feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start. You're not sure what's safe to delete, what's spam and what's not, what's backed up and what isn't.

So you try not to worry about it and carry on using your computer as normal. But you realise that what used to be simple day-to-day tasks have gradually become more and more frustrating and stress-inducing -

  • It takes forever to find anything - documents, photos and files are scattered all over your computer desktop and in all sorts of random folders. And when you do find what you think you're looking for you're not even sure if it's the most up-to-date version.

  • Every time you want to find an email you have to scour your inbox, searching up and down through the list of unread items, spam and countless newsletters you don't remember ever signing up for.

  • You're not sure where you saved that file or photo from the internet so every time you want to access it you have to go online and re-download it. Sooner than later you're left with a download folder clogged with duplicates that makes it even harder to find what you want.

It's easy to forget that computers are supposed to make your life easier, not waste your time and cause stress and frustration! That's why one of the most rewarding and satisfying things I like to help customers with is a general clean and tidy-up of their PC and inbox. Sometimes I can almost feel the weight coming off their shoulders as we go through the various files and folders together, making sure we keep what's important and delete what's not, put everything in its place, and get rid of all the excess clutter.

Suddenly everything is easier to navigate, easier to find, and much less stressful to use day-to-day. Even something as simple as a tidy desktop or organised inbox can make technology feel far less intimidating again.

With the gradual shift over the last two decades to make so much of our lives digital, everyday things like photos, documents, memories, finances, appointments and conversations have all moved onto our phones, laptops, computers and tablets. So when things feel unorganised digitally, it can make you feel unorganised too.

That's why I'm happy to help with my company - just an hour or two going through things is sometimes all it takes for a really thorough digital declutter. And it's one of the more rewarding services I offer for myself too as I can literally see the stress of my customers leaving in real time.

Technology should make life simpler, not more stressful, and sometimes a good digital clear-out can make a surprisingly big difference.
